Juneteenth marks the day when a quarter-million slaves in Texas first learned of their freedom. It was on June 19, 1865, that Union soldiers arrived in Galveston with news that the Civil War had ended and the enslaved were now free.  This was two-and-a-half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, which had become official on January 1, 1863.
